One conservative I knew argued that Detroit fell because of labor unions. However, though, anti-globalists would blame capitalists, claiming labor unions were not asking unreasonable demands.

Self preservation is the prerogative of all humans;labor unions most of the time look out for their members' interests hence the clashes with entrepreneurs and governments worldwide.
Sometimes labor unions maybe a cog in the wheel of progress when they make workers go on strikes over some needful economic reforms proposed by governments.

Anti-globalists would tag the demands of labor union to be unreasonable but when they would be embezzling public funds it's not going to be tagged unreasonable by their members. I think that the labor unions looks out for the best interest of its members. I'm 100% in support of all the activities and actions of the labor unions in seeking a better working condition for its members.

The failure of labor unions can be likened to the love of money by the heads of these unions whereby they accept money in order to play to the cards of the government in power. I always say that the labor unions will start to function well, if the heads will truly stand by the demands of the members and seek for justice. This is the best way that we can get to see a better society as well for as long as politics is still being played in labor unions, the issues will still be there.

I think there is always a Pros and Cons in everything and Labor Unions is not an exemption unto this. So I think to sum it up what is labor union in the first place, Labor Union is a union of labors where they have their way of reaching their common goals, improving safety standards and looking on the things where labors will be most beneficial in every things especially where it comes in a wages. So in this way labour unions also looks on the way that they have their funds where they have collected some funds thru its members and put it into a way or money of lending and investments where the money grows. So in that case labour unions will be beneficial in the way that it really helps the labors without affecting their performance and still helping the company to progress. Union members look at each member as their relatives or they show care to one another. But on the other way it hurts in some things when the heads of the unions did not see that they are above or exceed their limit and where the personal intentions more importance than its members. So that the one most common things why some unions failed and why some company did not allow unions to avoid the complications thru its members and to keep intact the relationship between the members the heads and the company as well.

Well I think it's all depends on their purpose, It's really hard to say something about the unions, specially if we know nothing about the situation. Unions helps a lot specially if the company abused their laborers, unions will helps every laborers to fight back and stand tall to any company who abused their workers. The only problem about the unions is when some politicians use this situation to get some sympathy and gain more votes for election.

Depends, sometimes they put too much of an upwards pressure on wages that they create unemployment. Other times they improve conditions and stop employees being taken advantage of. It is a big policy debate for how much power they should have and it seems to change over time.

Yes they definitely do, especially in catering for the rights of people who can't speak for themselves. Labor unions help people working to demand for their rights and freedom like better salaries and proper working conditions.

they were really needed 100 years ago when workers were being super abused. now they just waste their money and cause problems. Remember the one union that wouldn't budge so that the twinkies factory was shut down? that one union screwed the other workers and their unions who had agreed to concessions. being stubborn to the point of the factory shutting down doens't help.

There are good unions and bad unions. That said if you think abused workers is a thing of the past you must have led a charmed life. Workers routinely work unpaid hours, aren't given break, or are abused by managers in almost every business. For example many hotels and stores force workers to make up for till shortages or thefts from their own pockets. I have no doubt that without unions the abuse of workers would be more severe and the minimum wage much lower. Even centuries old issues like people dying in unsafe mines still occurs today and for the same reasons. The bosses care more about money than their employee's health and safety.
