Haven't read the books so cant say much for them. As for the degree/college thing. I think its worthwhile to go if you are going for a specific skill useful for an organisation/career you want. I find many people go for degrees that they just want to do for the sake of it rather than looking at the benefits it will give you in terms of higher pay, etc.
